General Election 2024 – Citizens UK initiative

With the deadline for voter registration (midnight on 18 June) fast approaching, Churches Together in England is proud to be working with Citizens UK as an Ambassador for the Voter Registration Champion scheme. Together they want to work with local churches on a non-partisan campaign to make sure 300,000 ‘at-risk’ voters – many of whom will be in your congregations – don’t miss out on the chance to cast their vote on 4 July.

With just a few weeks to go before the General Election, we face a crisis in democratic participation. The Electoral Commission estimates that 8 million eligible voters will miss out because they are not properly registered. 4 million eligible voters will miss out because they don’t have Photo ID. And 14 million eligible voters won’t see the point of turning out to vote. The research shows you are at greater risk of not being able to participate in the democratic process if you are young, a non-UK national, rent your home, have moved recently, live in an economically-disadvantaged community, or are from an ethnic minority.

Local church congregations have an important role to play in making sure their people – and the communities they serve – are ‘election ready’. Citizens UK have made it very easy for churches to sign up as ‘Voter Registration Champions’ and have produced tailored resources to prepare congregations to get their people registered to vote, equipped with the photo ID they’ll need to take to the polling station for the first time, and informed about how to vote.

There are just two Sundays left before the deadline for voter registration, but every local church could make a difference by taking some simple actions to engage their congregation during Voter Registration Week

(9 -18 June) using Citizens UK’s resources. You could get involved in ‘Election Sunday’ on Sunday 16June and get your people ‘election-ready’ during the Sunday service using these church-specific resources. Or you could choose to send a simple email to your congregations which includes everything they need to do to get ‘election-ready’.

Citizens UK have made it very easy to register as a Voter Registration Champion and get access to a wide range of resources – simply use this link.

The Voter Registration Champion campaign is already backed by the Baptist Union of Great Britain, Church of England, Methodist Church, Quakers in Britain, Salvation Army and United Reformed Church – so we hope you will join us in taking action to get 300,000 people ‘election ready’ this Voter Registration Week.
