JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE POSITION OF

YOUTH WORKER

BRETTON BAPTIST CHURCH PETERBOROUGH

MAIN PURPOSE:

To lead and provide vision for youth ministry at Bretton Baptist Church, developing, encouraging empowering and equipping its young people in their spiritual development, ministries and outreach.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • teach, disciple and mobilise the young people in the year 7-13 age group of Bretton Baptist Church, integrating young people into the wider life of the church
  • co-ordination of the midweek and Sunday youth programmes
  • develop opportunities for young people to take part in and contribute to services
  • lead, support, encourage and train our youth leaders team
  • co-ordinate and lead residential events for the young people
  • develop outreach, evangelism and social action amongst young people in the locality
  • develop contacts with, and engage in, work in local schools
  • represent Bretton Baptist Church in local, and city wide, youth initiatives e.g. CROPS
  • to play an active role in supporting and encouraging the whole staff team, collaborating on joint initiatives as appropriate
  • support YP through the transition from the children’s ministry to the youth ministry
  • assist in the wider ministry of Bretton Baptist Church under the direction of the Ministers and Leadership Team

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 The Youth Worker:

  • will be line-managed by a member of the Senior Leadership Team
  • is accountable to the Leadership Team and, ultimately, to the Church Meeting
  • is expected to draw up and work within approved budgets in consultation with the Honorary Treasurer and the Office Manager
  • should ensure confidentiality together with the keeping of secure and applicable records

The successful candidate will be comfortable working within the structures and emphases of a Baptist Church committed to the practice and theology of Believer’s Baptism and the ministry of Word and Spirit.  They should have a vision for youth work and the ability to communicate and develop that vision.
 ESSENTIALDESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS:Although there are no specific Youthwork qualification requirements, we would expect applicants to have good understanding of youthwork and ministryTheology/Biblical Studies qualification or working towards one
EXPERIENCE:The successful candidate should have: extensive and varied experience of working with young people in a church contexta demonstrable ability to organise a wide range of activities and events for young peopleexperience of working with young people within a school environmentexperience of working with young people from socially deprived areas and/or dysfunctional families
ABILITIES:  The successful candidate should have the ability to: establish and develop relationships with young people, parents, volunteers, the wider church community, the local community including schools and city-wide organisationsdevelop and communicate a vision for Youth ministry  and champion it within the churchenthuse, recruit, lead and train a team of volunteer youth leaderscommunicate effectively to allmusical or other performance skills
SKILLS:The successful candidate will be able to: work with autonomy and initiative within set boundariescope with conflicting demands, deadlines and interruptionsorganise themselves, prioritise workload and delegate where appropriatework within a shared office spacebe able to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writinguse independent means of transportfull UK Driving Licence
PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES:The successful candidate will have a commitment to: continuing Professional developmentsafeguarding policy and practiceshared leadership and ministryusing email, word processing software and presentational software competentlyexperience as a child protection officer or child advocate
PERSONAL QUALITIES:The successful candidate will have a: practicing Christian faith and be in sympathy with the aims and ethos of Bretton Baptist Churchcommitment to personal spiritual development

EMPLOYER:             Bretton Baptist Church

LINE MANAGER:     Associate Minister

CONTRACT:                Permanent contract

SALARY:                    From £20,000 pro rata, depending on qualifications and experience

APPRAISAL:                Annually

HOURS:                         20 hours per week – these will be flexible and will include evenings and weekends

ANNUAL LEAVE:     25 days plus bank holidays

There is a genuine occupational requirement for the post holder to be a committed Christian in accordance with Part 1 of Schedule 9 of the equality Act 2010. The role will be subject to satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check.
